The Challenge
To collect high-quality voice and facial data from children with dysarthria in a way that’s engaging, accessible, and enjoyable - overcoming boredom, fatigue, and communication barriers to support the development of future assistive technologies.
The Brief
Create an engaging, child-friendly solution that captures the critical voice and facial movement data needed for dysarthria research—ensuring children with cerebral palsy can contribute meaningfully to the development of assistive communication technologies and have equal access to opportunities for expression, inclusion, and independence.

The Approach
Turning Play into Progress
The solution is My Voice Library — a gamified, data-collection app designed for children with dysarthria. Through fun, accessible gameplay, children record specific words and phrases while interacting with friendly characters and progressing through themed levels.
The experience is broken into simple, motivating tasks that reduce fatigue and boost engagement. The collected voice and facial data is securely stored and made available to researchers, biomedical engineers, and speech pathologists to develop real-time communication tools.
Co-designed with users, clinicians, and engineers, the app transforms a clinical process into an empowering and enjoyable activity for children with cerebral palsy.

The Results
“My cerebral palsy is who I am and I am very proud of it. I really can’t imagine life without cerebral palsy. But my biggest disability is my speech, and not being able to have instant communication without planning the best way to get my message across. In future, our My Voice Library research will make communication easier for people with cerebral palsy, and I’m proud to be involved,” said participant Maria.
