The Challenge

Create a platform that is safe, accessible, and empowering for Aboriginal parents navigating child protection systems. Complex legal information should be transformed into a clear, intuitive experience, allowing parents to quickly find answers and support.

The Brief

The brief extended far beyond digitising a PDF flowchart. It was to design a culturally safe, accessible platform for Aboriginal parents navigating the child protection system — transforming complex legal pathways into a clear, intuitive interactive digital experience that builds trust and confidence. Alongside the platform, a brand designer and myself were tasked with creating a considered brand identity and a cohesive suite of digital assets, ensuring the experience felt unified, empowering, and grounded in respect at every touchpoint.

The Approach

Empowering Aboriginal families

The approach focused on creating a user-friendly, accessible platform that provides a suite of resources to support Aboriginal families in need. Working alongside social policy experts and community advocates to ensure the content is not only informative but culturally sensitive and relevant. The platform includes:

Know Your Rights Resources: Easy-to-understand guides that explain legal and child protection processes, including flowcharts, legal jargon breakdowns, and policy explanations.

Actionable Insights: Practical tips, real-life experiences, and success stories from other parents who have navigated the system, helping users feel empowered and less isolated.

Interactive Workbooks: Tools for parents to gather evidence and document their interactions with DCJ, ensuring they are prepared at every stage of the process.

Multimedia Content: Video and audio resources designed to cater to diverse learning styles, making the information accessible for all users, regardless of literacy levels.

Our goal was to break down barriers to knowledge, ensuring that parents have access to clear, reliable information that helps them navigate their rights and advocacy options effectively.

The Results

The Parents' Rights website provides Aboriginal families with the tools they need to advocate for themselves and protect their children. With a user-centred design, the platform ensures wide accessibility, offering content in multiple formats to cater to different preferences and needs. The resourceful materials equip parents with the knowledge to understand the child protection process, take actionable steps, and challenge decisions when necessary.

The collaboration between AbSec and community stakeholders has created a platform that addresses a significant gap in the availability of legal and child protection information for Aboriginal families, ultimately helping them to retain custody of their children and advocate for their rights.
